Should You Rebuild Your Transmission?
Having a transmission problem isn’t the end of the world. As a matter of fact it’s quite common with most cars. Most of the time you will only need a minor repair, but in the times that you require more than minor work to be done it helps to know more about what you’re getting into.
Getting a rebuilt transmission isn’t necessarily a bad thing either so long as the car and other components (the engine most importantly) are in proper condition.
We get asked several questions a day about transmissions so we thought we’d highlight some of the most frequent ones.
How much does a new transmission cost?
There really is no such thing as a new transmission unless it comes straight from the factory. Otherwise it will be used or rebuilt at an auto shop. Either way, a transmission can cost anywhere from a couple hundred to a couple thousand dollars.
How do I check my transmission fluid?
If you can check it from under the hood then the dip stick is usually red. However you may need to check your owner’s manual and some makes and models have to be checked from underneath the vehicle.
How do I know if it’s the transmission that’s the problem?
Many modern makes and models are run with the help of computer components that will inform you if there’s a problem. You will likely see a check engine or maintenance light on. Try to pay attention to abnormal sounds or vibrations from the transmission. Your best bet would be to bring it into an auto shop for further inspection.
Can I drive with a transmission leak?
Yes but not for long. The only place you should be driving it is to the auto shop to get it fixed. A common transmission leak can lead to very expensive repairs if ignored. Do NOT put this off!
Why is my car slipping gears/not shifting properly?
This can be caused by a variety of things that may not require a transmission rebuild job. You may need to have a part serviced or replaced or you may be lacking fluid. Get a diagnostic test to find out what the problem is.
