Prepare Your Car for Cold Temperatures this Winter
It’s safe to say that the freezing temperatures of the winter months are the one time you don’t want your car to break down. Being stuck on the side of the road in freezing weather can be completely avoidable if you make sure to check some key areas in your car.
Safety should always be your number one concern when out on the road; however there are some specific check points to go over when driving in cold weather. It’s best to check them now before it gets too cold but checking them anytime during the winter is better than ignoring it altogether.
If you keep track of your checkups then go through your paperwork to see if you’re due for an oil change or tune-up. If everything seems up to date, then it’s time to take a look under the hood.
Tips for preparing for winter
- Antifreeze – it is very important to maintain a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze for full protection in the winter months. Antifreeze testers can be purchased for under $20.00
- Check your tires – we’ve all seen the videos of cars sliding on icy roads hitting every car and tree in their path. Avoid this nightmare! As your last line of defense there is no room for being cheap when it comes to your tires. Check the tire pressure and tread depth and if you plan on driving outside of Texas then consider snow tires.
- Windshield wipers and washer fluid – believe it or not you’ll be using a lot of washer fluid this winter. Get stuck behind a truck and within seconds your windshield will covered in muck. If your wipers don’t seem to be up to the job then replace them. You don’t want to be responsible for a wreck due to lack of visibility.
- Buy a scraper – if you haven’t already. Although the frozen winter mornings may come fewer in Texas it’s always better to be prepared. You can either have a scraper ready to clear your windshield and be on your way or you can sit in your driveway for 15 minutes while you wait for it to defrost. Those 15 minutes mean a lot when you’re trying to get to work!
Checking these key areas can prevent a lot of stress during the holiday months. Checking your engine, battery, and brakes is always important so if it’s been awhile since they’ve been checked then give them a good look over.
