Unusual Sounds Can Lead to Engine Trouble
As a car owner you know what to expect when you get behind the wheel. Your car behaves a certain way and when it changes, such as with a sound, you definitely take notice. Hearing an unusual or unpleasant sound can spark off several questions in your head. Where is the sound coming from? What could be causing the sound? Is this going to be an expensive fix?
When your car acts out of the ordinary it can give you an unsettling feeling. Although you should get it looked at right away we understand that always isn’t the case. You live a busy life and can’t always stop everything down for an automotive repair.
Until that time comes keep your ears open for any sounds during your drive. The type of sound you hear may give you a better idea of what could be causing it and possibly finding a way to stop it.
Noises can come from just about anywhere inside or outside the car. If you’ve concluded that it is coming from the engine then try to see when the sound is occurring during your drive.
Some sounds you may be hearing:
- Hissing – if it sounds like steam escaping then your engine could be overheating or there could be something wrong with the vacuum line. Take a look at the car’s cooling system.
- Engine backfire/popping – the popping sound should be a dead giveaway and it could mean you have serious engine trouble. Inspect the camshaft for damage and make sure the belt or chain hasn’t slipped.
- Grinding – although it’s usually associated with worn brakes, hearing it when you start your car could mean your starter motor needs replacing.
If you’re hearing something other than these three problematic engine sounds then you should try to schedule an appointment at your local auto shop. Be as descriptive as possible when you explain what you’re experiencing to the mechanic so he can give you the help you need.
