Troubleshooting Your Car’s Brake Problems
Brake problems can be unsettling, especially if you don’t know what’s causing it. They are the most important part of any car since they are what are keeping you from colliding into everything else on the road. There are some car problems that don’t require immediate attention and you’ll be okay.
However this not something you want to do with your brakes. If you’re already asking yourself worrisome questions like: Is it safe to drive my car? Or will my brakes go out while I’m driving?
Getting your brakes looked at as soon as possible is the smartest thing you can do. We recommend you leave it to the professionals but if you’re adamant about finding out the problem yourself then there are some key areas to check when you start troubleshooting.
Car brake problems come in all shapes and sizes so we’re going to look at two common brake problems and what could be the potential cause.
Squealing or Grinding Sound
This may be the most common problem and also the most annoying. Hearing that high pitched squealing sound when applying the brakes is not only unpleasant but it’s happening for a reason.
The answer is worn brake pads. When your brakes need replacing they get worn down to a certain point and are designed to let you know by making a loud grinding sound and it’s time for them to be replaced.
Although less common it is also possible to hear squealing sounds due to a missing gasket in the brake pad.
Pedal Vibrates Upon Application
This problem may be more involving since there are multiple things that can cause pedal vibration. You could have bad or warped brake pads. If outside contaminants get onto the pad they can vibrate and grip the rotor. Either way they need to be replaced.
If the pads are fine then check the brake discs. Bad discs can cause the brakes to grab unevenly creating a vibration.
If there is nothing wrong with your brake system then your car may need an alignment. A car out of alignment can cause several problems and pedal vibration is one of them.
Checking these key areas should provide you with some answers to your brake problem. If you still have questions then bring your car into 2J’s Automotive.
