The Transmission Rebuild Process

transmission-rebuild2For many drivers the transmission can be a very intimidating piece of machinery. It has hundreds of different components that work together to transfer power from the engine to the wheels. We’ve all heard stories of mechanics telling people it would be cheaper to get a new car than to replace the transmission. As much as we may have dreaded this from happening it’s time to make moves to fix the problem.

Your safest option would be to take it to a trained professional who specializes in transmissions and we have several experts at 2J’s Automotive who can easily get the job done for you. However, if you want an automotive challenge or are just curious as to the process then follow these steps to get started.

Before you start on anything you want to first find out what exactly is going on with your transmission and why it’s failing to do its job.

Once you’ve determined a rebuild job is required then you want to purchase a trustworthy manual.

When you’re ready, remove the transmission from the vehicle. There are different ways of doing this depending on if you have a manual or automatic transmission and what your make and model is. This may also require other components to be removed to gain access to the transmission.

The transmission is then completely disassembled once it’s been removed from the car. Have plenty of room to lay out all of the parts and label them.

All of the parts are cleaned and laid out to dry.

Once you have all of the grime and dirt cleaned off of the parts you need to inspect every single piece. Look for parts that have cracks or holes and replace as necessary.

After every part has been cleaned, inspected, and replaced, it’s time to reassemble the transmission.

Testing the rebuilt transmission is next. If you’re able to gain access it is highly recommended you test it computer controlled testing.

If everything checks out just fine then the transmission is then ready to be put back into your vehicle and reconnected to the other components.

As you can imagine this process is very involving and can be complicated depending on what kind of car you drive. The transmission specialists at 2J’s Automotive can rebuild, reseal, and replace your standard or automatic transmission.
