Know When To Service Your Front or Rear Differential

Rear Differential

Your car’s differential is an integral part to driving your car and keeping it in control. Without a differential your car will only drive in a straight line without the ability to turn. Whether your car has front wheel drive, rear wheel drive or four wheel drive it has a differential. Depending on what kind of vehicle you have you may have more than one.

Basically the differential’s job is to compensate for differences in wheel speed whenever you turn your car. If you take a turn then your inside wheel has less distance to travel than your outside wheel. In order for the outside wheel to make up the distance and catch up to the inside wheel it must travel faster in order to keep up. The differential allows your wheels to turn at different speeds so your car doesn’t just drag and scrape along the pavement while in the middle of a turn.

All differentials contain a fluid that lubricates the gears and cools them in order for it to function more efficiently. Like most other fluids and lubricants for your car it eventually breaks down and needs to be replaced. Knowing what particular fluid to use, and when to use it, usually depends on your vehicle’s make and model. Check your car’s manual to see what fluid they recommend and if it’s been long enough for it to be serviced and replaced.

It’s important to note that it is still risky to service your car without the proper knowledge and experience. You could end up voiding out a warranty or putting your car in worse shape than it was before. If you feel uncomfortable repairing your own car then bring it in to 2J’s Automotive.
