Noisy Axles Could be a Problem
There is no doubt your axles are very important components for your vehicle. Any vehicle that has wheels has axles and when they go bad your three primary actions are at risk: driving, braking, and turning.
The main function of the axle is to put the wheels into motion with power from the transmission and it really only has one weak spot which is the constant velocity joint. The CV joint enables the axle to flex so your car can take smoother turns. This joint is protected by a boot and if the joint fails then the entire axle can break which could potentially cause some very serious problems.
So how do you know something is wrong with the axle?
Like most potential problems with your car the best thing to do is listen. Listen for anything out of the ordinary and take note when it happens. If you’re hearing a clunking or chattering sound when you first put it into gear then nine times out of ten it’s due to a broken axle.
If not then try to find an open lot and drive carefully and try turning your car all the way to the left or right. You’ll know there’s something wrong with the axle if you’re hearing a clicking sound.
You can also check the axle with your own eyes. If you see axle grease on the axle then it means the protective CV boot has failed and the joint is drying out.
Note: Be careful upon inspecting the axle. Axle grease is very thick and is nearly impossible getting it out of clothes and very difficult getting it off of your hands.
Complete axle failure could result in your car being undriveable. If you suspect something is wrong with one of your axles then bring your car into 2J’s Automotive as soon as possible. Trying to fix the problem yourself could result in even more damage because certified mechanics should be the only people operating on a broken axle.
