Lack of Coolant Can Cause Overheating Problems

engine-troubleIt’s summer time and you’ve already taken notice to the steady rise in temperatures. Soon enough it will be in the triple digits and when that time comes you don’t want to be left with no air conditioning and an overheating engine.

Essentially, the engine is the heart of the car and the cooling system makes sure the engine doesn’t run too hot. An overheating engine can lead to additional problems and expensive repairs.

If it continues to go unchecked, you could suffer from complete engine failure or other components under the hood could become damaged.

So, what causes engine overheating? How do you check the coolant levels?

There a couple of different things to look for if you’re trying to understand and diagnose the problem yourself.

Engine overheating can be caused by a number of different things but the main culprit is lack of radiator fluid.

Tip: Play it safe and check radiator fluid every time you get an oil change. It’s easy to check and refill once you’ve seen it done and can save you a lot of stress in the future!

If you suspect low fluid levels then check the radiator when the engine is cool. Refill the radiator with coolant and the problem should be solved. If you start to notice some of the same symptoms of overheating after 30 minutes to an hour of driving then you probably have a leak in the radiator. A temperature gauge that is in the red is NOT safe and we do not advise you to keep driving.

Inspect the ground near the radiator for puddles of coolant. The size of the puddle can give you an idea on the severity of the leak.

Stop leak products can be purchased and will work if the leak isn’t too big. However, if the leak can’t be found or stopped then you should bring your car into 2J’s Automotive.
