Diagnosing Your Differential Noise
Without a differential your vehicle is a sitting piece of scrap metal. They take the power from the engine and put your wheels into motion as well as allow your wheels to spin at different speeds, which is basically how the differential gets its name. If your wheels can spin at different speeds then your car can’t turn.
Differential problems can be very serious which is why it’s important to pay attention to any irregularities you may be experiencing while driving. Like most problems with your car you’re going to want to listen for any unusual sounds as well as vibrations.
Try to listen for when the sound occurs and see if you can locate where the sound is coming from.
Here are some sounds you may be hearing if you have a bad differential or driveline:
- Clanking sound – may be a sign of worn out U-joints if heard when putting the car into gear after it’s been idle
- Humming or clunking sound – can be caused by worn down gears or possible transmission issues
- Vibrations while turning – this problem is likely caused by bad wheel bearings
- Whining or screeching sound – if heard during acceleration then you could have bad ring and pinion gears
Like always, check for fluid leaks underneath your vehicle. If a leak goes unnoticed then over time your differential will begin to fail. Look near the front and rear of the vehicle depending on if you have a front or rear differential.
Vibrations can be tricky to read. However if you are feeling a vibration on the car’s floorboard then you more than likely have a damaged U-joint.
