Dealing with Car Engine Problems

Engine failure is a problem no car owner ever wants to deal with. Not only is it stressful and time consuming but it can put quite a dent in your wallet. You don’t need to be a master mechanic to keep your car in good shape, but it’s imperative you look and listen to anything that might sound suspicious during your driving experience.

In some cases the cost of a new engine is worth more than the resale value on your car making it a poor investment. You can avoid engine failure and replacement by noticing unusual engine noises and vibrations.

Other signs and symptoms for engine trouble:

  • Excessive smoke from tail pipe
  • Low oil pressure
  • Water mixing in with the oil
  • Check Engine light is on
  • Ignition problems

Tip: A ‘Check Engine’ light can range from small to severe. If your ‘Check Engine’ light is blinking or flashing then it is a serious problem that should not be ignored.

Poor maintenance and lack of lubrication are big contributors to causing some of the problems you may have experienced out on the road.

The services you require will largely depend on what problem you’re experiencing. If you’re hearing a heavy knocking sound coming from the engine then odds are it’s caused by worn engine bearings that need to be replaced.

Hearing a hissing sound can often mean there is a leak somewhere. Locating it can be tricky, but if you’ve identified it in the intake manifold or one of the parts then the gasket may need to be tightened or replaced.

If a very noticeable vibration is being felt then it’s possible one of the cylinders has misfired and an ignition coil will have to be replaced.
