CV Joint Repair and Replacement

CV-jointWithout a doubt, the wheel is what actually puts your car into motion. However, without the axle the wheel wouldn’t do us much good and it’s the constant velocity joint (or CV joint) that transfers the power from the axle to the wheel to get you from point A to point B.

Many drivers out there have never heard of a CV joint so when the mechanic recommends they be replaced the suggestion is often ignored since it’s not clearly understood what they actually do. The fact is that once they wear out the services to replace them can easily reach $500 or more if more than one is severely damaged (a very real possibility).

Most vehicles have four CV joints located on the front axle. Two inner joints and two outer joints and they serve three main purposes:

  • Transfer of power to the wheels at a range of angles
  • Suspension travel
  • Steering and handling, especially during turns

Although CV joints are protected by a rubber boot problems still occur. The boot holds in grease and keeps out contaminants to protect the CV joint. Eventually the boot wears out first and will crack or split leaving the CV joint exposed to dirt, water, and road debris.

Drivers usually get suspicious when they start hearing a rattle or clicking sound when they take turns. The longer you put the service off the louder the clicking sound will become and your bill could get to be expensive if you continue putting it off.

Depending on how you drive, your CV joint should last anywhere from 75,000 – 125,000 miles but they have been known to last longer in some conditions.
