A Clutch Problem Could Be a Flywheel Problem

Clutch problems are never fun. When something goes wrong with your clutch system it usually causes some kind of irregularities in your driving that are clearly noticeable. Problems with standard transmissions can be easier to spot but automatics may prove to be a little trickier.

Doing some troubleshooting may help you identify the source of the problem and in some cases it may just be a bad flywheel.

What is a flywheel?

car-clutchA flywheel is a rotating device that can be used to store energy. In vehicles, they work to reduce any vibrating and keep the gears in working order when the driver uses the clutch. When you start to feel more vibration when shifting gears it could be a sign of a failing flywheel.

Note: The vibration will likely be felt on the floor of the car when operating the clutch.

There are different types of flywheels you can get depending on your make and model but in the end they all serve the same purpose and have the same symptoms if something goes wrong.

Signs of Flywheel Failure

There are three common symptoms people experience with bad flywheels and one of them we already covered.

  • Vibration – if the car vibrates when using the clutch then you have a bad flywheel. When the spring mount mechanism on the flywheel fails it is then unable to diminish the tremors felt when shifting.
  • Slippage – if the car slips in and out of gear then you could have a bad flywheel on your hands. The slipping is caused by intensified friction and oil contamination as well as plate grinding.
  • Burning Smell – if it smells like you’ve burned your toast too much then it’s a sign of a bad flywheel. The burnt toast smell is the result of too much heat in the clutch facings.
