Your Car May Need A New Or Rebuilt Transmission
Car transmissions perform several different functions simultaneously. It works with your engine to shift your car into gear and get you from point A to point B smoothly and safely. An engine without a transmission will be overworked which will quickly lead to overheating and that can have a number of detrimental effects on your vehicle.
The automatic transmission is more complex than the standard transmission because there are more moving parts that allow your car to shift automatically. More electronic components come into play and that can sometimes make things more complicated if one of them starts to malfunction.
If something is wrong with your automatic or standard transmission then the first thing you should check is to see if the ‘Check Engine’ light is on. That gives you a good starting point but if it’s not on and you’re convinced something isn’t right with your transmission then there are a couple of things you can check to confirm your suspicions.
The first and obvious sign the problem is your transmission and nothing else is your car will have difficulties shifting. Either it won’t shift at all or it shifts very roughly and abruptly. After driving your car for a good amount of time you should have an idea of when it should be shifting so you’ll notice any abnormalities.
The other two common signs to look for are transmission leaks and gear slippage.
- Transmission leaks – leaks are usually one of the easiest ways to spot a problem with a car. Your vehicle requires several different fluids but to find out if it’s the transmission that is leaking check the puddle of fluid. Transmission fluid is red in color and has a slight sweet smell to it.
- Gear slippage – This happens when your car “slips” in and out of gear. This can sometimes catch the driver off-guard and can also be potentially dangerous. If the transmission pops in and out of the gear then the car can suddenly speed up without any action from the driver.
